COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

PRE-ALGEBRA: PREREQUISITE – DECIMALS & FRACTIONS

This course will place a strong emphasis on the continued study of integers, order of operations, variables, expressions, and equations. Students will solve and graph equations and inequalities, write and solve proportions, and explore geometry, statistics, and graph concepts. Problem solving will be emphasized throughout the course.

ALGEBRA 1: PREREQUISITE – PRE-ALGEBRA OR MATH 7/8

Algebra I is a course in which students learn how to solve problems by using variables to represent unknown quantities and then solving for those unknown quantities by writing equations and inequalities. Course topics include a review of the order of operations with integers, solving equations, and simplifying expressions. Students will work extensively on solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities. Additional topics will include rules of exponents, factors and polynomials, polynomial fractions, quadratics and radicals.

GEOMETRY: PREREQUISITE – ALGEBRA 1

The course includes the following topics: geometry terminology, inductive and deductive reasoning, the development of a postulate system, and the geometric proof. Various algebraic techniques are incorporated. Students will also study area, volume, circles, and right triangles.
ALGEBRA 2: PREREQUISITE – ALGEBRA 1

This course is designed to build on algebraic and geometric concepts. It develops advanced algebra skills such as systems of equations, advanced polynomials, imaginary and complex numbers, quadratics, and concepts and includes the study of trigonometric functions. It also introduces matrices and their properties. The content of this course are important for students’ success on both the ACT and college mathematics entrance exams.

PRE-CALCULUS: PREREQUISITE – ALGEBRA 2 & GEOMETRY

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive study of functions, which are the basis of calculus and other higher mathematics courses. The students will study the properties and graphs of trigonometric, polynomial, rational, inverse, exponential and logarithmic functions in the first semester. During the second semester, the students will explore inequalities, polar coordinates, complex numbers, conic sections, matrices, vectors, sequences, series and limits.
